Bidean Nam Bian
Richards Mountain Pages
From the road, the driver sees three mountains - the three buttresses known as the three
sisters of Glencoe. They are actually regarded as one mountain, but with three tops that are counted
as Munros - and no its not the top of each of the buttresses - its more complex than that.
Bidean Nam Bian is a hard peak to get up. On virtually every side there are steep buttresses that are best
left to the serious climbers. Those routes that do exist generally need a little route finding and the familiarity
of hand on rock for some easy scrambling.
Like most of the peaks of Glencoe, Bidean Nam Bian is volcanic in origin. The rock is mainly a mix of basalt with
flecks of volcanic ash. The exception is the Eastern Munro peak, which has a wide band of red granite - a weakness
which provides one of the easier routes up.
