The Mountain Room
The Buachaille at dawn (24" x 18", oil, 2002)
I stayed several nights at the Kingshouse waiting for a good view of the Buachaille
to emerge from the grey weather. I had all but given up, when on the last morning I awoke
to the mountain glowing red and orange. It lasted only 15 minutes before clouds arrived.
Assynt - Canisp and Suilven (30" x 20", oil, 2004)
The afternoon before the annular eclipse of 2003, I took a postbus to Lochinver
and then walked in for a night at Suileag bothy. This is the view from that approach.
The pass of Ben Alder (24" x 18", oil, 2002)
Having camped and bothied for three nights I climbed every peak nearby.
As I left for the long walk out I took many pictures of the receding peaks.
This one I turned into a painting.
The Five Sisters from Ratagan Hostel (30" x 20", oil, 2000)
Of all the views from hotels, guests houses, hostels and bunkhouses
this is surely the finest. From a comfortable chair in the hostel lounge
you can spend the whole day watching the light change over these magnificent peaks.
Langdale Pikes in February (24" x 18", oil, 1998)
Despite the season, the previous day proved to be the hottest of my year.
The grey clouds and damp weather soon returned,
but the bracken still shone a bright orange as I climbed Wetherlam.
