The Mountain Room 2

The Malvern Hills
The Malvern Hills (20" x 16", oil, 1999)
The photo for this painting was taken from a well known postcard picture spot along the chain
shortly before I turned for home, tripped over a tree stump and landed on another one.
It took three weeks to be able to walk properly again.

Cruachan Range From Ben Lui (20" X 10", oil, 1996)
In February the mountains can look stunning with a coating of snow.
However they can also be deadly. On the day this photo was taken a snowstorm
blew in within a couple of hours and engulfed everything.

Beinn Dorainn in Spring
Beinn Dorainn and the Horseshoe Viaduct (30" x 20", oil, 1993)
Returning from an early trip to the highlands, Beinn Dorainn had a fresh coat of snow
in the bright morning light. From the window of the train I caught a passing shot.
This picture captures the detail of the mountain and adds a little foreground imagination.

Ben Lui from An Caisteal
Ben Lui Range From An Caisteal (20" x 16", oil, 1996)
I had had a marvellous few days of clear skies and crisp snow underfoot before climbing
An Caisteal. On this day the weather started changing. This picture captures the hazy view
from the cairn, still encrusted in a delicate ice rime. The rime proved quite a challenge to paint.

Bheinn A Ghlo from Carn A Mhaim
Bheinn A Ghlo from Carn A Mhaim (14" X 18", oil, 1996)
Every one of my trips to the Cairngorms has involved lots of bad weather. On this day,
I got this view across to Bheinn A Ghlo from the relatively low peak of Carn A Mhaim.
My walk continued to the Devils Point, where I saw a squall tumble down the Lairig Ghru
swallowing the peaks, like a B-movie special effect.
