The Other Room

Wave, Orkneys
Wave (20" x 16", oil, 2003)
Skara Brae was crowded with coach parties, and I had another hour before the bus
so I followed the shore to some cliffs, and despite it being a clam day,
I found a crystal clear sea breaking on the shore

Gog Magog Hills, Cambridge
Gog Magog Hills, Cambridge (60cm x 50cm, pen & ink, c1995)
Many years ago, I was living in Cambridge. One hot sunny day, I cycled up the only
hills nearby, and took a photo from the cool shade of a little beech wood.
I found the distinct colours and woodland detail worked well with ink.

Clitheroe Cement Works
Clitheroe Cement Works (20" x 16", oil, 2000)
On seeing these angular buildings I was reminded of some Paul Nash pictures I had seen.
Thus inspired, I had a go at painting this industrial landscape.

Sunset cloudscape, Mallaig
Sunset Cloudscape, Mallaig (14" x 18", oil, 2002)
I arrived in Mallaig on a showery day, to catch the ferry to Knoydart the next morning.
The showers cleared, so I strolled up the hills behind the town for the sunset.

Rough Tor at Dawn
Rough Tor at Dawn (16" X 20", oil, 2001)
To get this picture I camped out on Bodmin Moor in March
I was fearful of the tales of 'the beast' of Bodmin Moor,
but saw no hungry critters that night - just midges and cows!
