Hotels And Guest Houses
Richards Mountain Pages
During my travels I've stayed at a lot of guest houses and hotels. I've experience lumpy beds, greasy breakfasts,
dodgy showers, and the sort of service that makes Fawlty Towers seem friendly. Luckily I've never suffered all this
in one place, and most places are much better.
On the plus side there have been some places that have been quite amazing. Often its the location, but there
are places out there where the food is excellent, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the owners are friendly.
So here I've listed the best...
Kinlochewe - Cromasaig Guest House
Hearty Meals from hosts that know all about the great outdoors. The porridge is quite something else!
You'll find this place right at the foot of Beinn Eighe, and within a long stroll of Slioch.

Pontyates - Glynfach Farm
A quiet spot in an undiscovered corner of Wales. Its halfway between Kidwelly Castle and the rocky crest of
Mynydd Llangeyndeyrn. Expect some interesting variations for breakfast.

Vale Of York (Danby Wiske) - Oakdene Guest House
This one is right on the Coast To Coast path, at its lowest point. The village pub had a nice atmosphere,
and this guest house had the tastiest honey I have ever come across. They keep bees on the
Yorkshire Moors, so for breakfast you can have 100% heather honey on your toast.
Kingshouse Hotel (Glencoe)
This is a hotel with history and prices that are at the top end of my budget, but in return you get the most
superb view of the Buachaille glowing red outside the window at dawn. As well as the view, I can recommend the
climbers breakfast (after which you'll struggle to climb out of the chair), and the lounge. Unfortunately the
rooms themselves don't match the quality you would expect. Also, I advise you to avoid the UHT milk in the
tea tray - the sun makes it turn before its use by date.
Cluanie Inn (Glen Shiel)
Another well located hotel with history. This one also has a view to die for, though no strategically placed
lounge to make the best of them. I found my room very comfortable, and the food and the beer up to standard.
If you can afford it there is a jacuzzi suite.
