Scree
Richards Mountain Pages

Theres nothing better than a nice scree run to get down a mountain, and theres nothing worse than one to get up it in the first place. These sliding slopes of loose rock have formed over a heck of a long time by the action of water working its way into crevices in the rocks. The water freezes and snaps off a piece of rock. Unfortunately piling up enough for a scree run takes quite some time, whilst it takes just a few too many visitors to erode them. There are plenty of good scree runs around (particularly on the Red Cuillin of Skye) - I've listed a few here, but please avoid the temptation to run back up to the top for another go (if you can run up 900m that is). Its nice to leave some for the next visitor.

1) Glamaig (left) - one big heap of scree

2) Liathach - a 900m run into the village of Torridon

3) Skiddaw - a nice soft carpet of schist

Don't try - Red Screes - the fans end with a sharp drop
